My band Playgroup has the beginnings of a website, finally, which can be found atwww.playgroupband.com. There are a few audio samples (of us playing in my kitchen, captured by Julia’s new Olympus hand-held recorder), pictures of us playing at the Bath contra in December, a calendar of events, and even a glimpse of our snazzy new band logo. Take a look!
We had a very fine time last night at the Boxing Day contra dance at Simonton Corners in West Rockport. Not only was the band eager to burn off some holiday calories, but we had a more-than-ample crowd of seventy dancers to share the energy, despite the threat of winter driving weather. Many thanks to Steve Cartwright who now organizes dances at Simonton Corners, and also to John & Nancy for making the trek from Unity to call and provide sound.
I am glad that Playgroup has a fair number of dance gigs lined up already for 2010, since playing with Julia, Zack and Alden is such a hoot these days.
Hope Hoffman and I decided to let the tape roll while practicing for our October 11 contra dance in Rockland, and some small snippets of that are on her website. I’m playing piano here, and Hope is fiddling. The tunes include Banks of Inverness, Liza Jane, Anything for John Joe, and an original tune of Hope’s called Green Apples. They’re pretty short clips, and I hope to put longer versions up on my site in the near future.
Zack Davis, Alden Robinson and I are playing a contra this Saturday at the Orono Community Center, with Phil Locke calling. There is a beginners’ session at 7:30 and the regular contra begins at 8:00. Julia Plumb can’t make it down to play fiddle with us, unfortunately, but we ought to have fun anyway. For one thing, the last time we played in this configuration was several years ago when we went by the name Callithump. Callithump returns! Hope to see you there.
A new contra dance series is beginning in Rockland on second Sundays from 3:30 to 6:00 PM at the Lincoln Street Arts Center. I will be playing piano on October 11 with fiddler Hope Hoffman. Crissy Fowler is calling. A nice, relaxed Sunday afternoon of dancing. A beginners’ session starts at 3:00 PM. More info on Hope’s website, or on the Facebook page for the Rockland contra. It should be a lot of fun! Hope’s fiddling is a blast, and of course, Crissy Fowler is a legendary dance guru. . . .
